Tickets are selling fast to Wine Festival Winchester, the new initiative by BBC1 wine experts Susie & Peter in England’s ancient capital. So be quick!
The event, which is being held in Winchester Guildhall from 21-23 November, will feature hundreds of wines from around the world, all free to taste as part of the entry price. There will be local food, music, masterclasses featuring cheese and chocolate, prize draws and a free wine glass worth £12.50 for all visitors.
The festival has assembled an enviable list of wine producers, suppliers and retailers. There are six Hampshire sparkling wine producers, including Hattingley Valley, Hambledon and Jenkyn Place, alongside local retailers Toscanaccio, Black White & Red, The Naked Grape, Caviste, Berry Brothers & Rudd and brands from as far afield as New Zealand, Portugal and Chile.
Susie & Peter are not only Winchester residents but also the nation’s favourite wine couple, regulars on BBC1’s Saturday Kitchen and the youngest married Masters of Wine. ‘We can’t wait to welcome everyone to the festival, chat and help steer people in the direction of delicious wine,’ they comment. ‘It’s going to be a lot of fun!’
At the recent promotional party to launch Wine Festival Winchester, local MP Steve Brine said, ‘You struggle to believe Winchester hasn’t always had a wine festival but it will now Peter & Susie have taken the initiative. I cannot think of a better combination for an event like this than Winchester and the undoubted masters of wine who we are so lucky to have living here in the city.’
In order to help people find wines they like at the festival, Susie and Peter have devised a colour-coded system called ‘Follow Your Taste’. Wine is broken down into six flavour styles and bottles at the event will have coloured neck tags to indicate their style. ‘It’s to help people experiment with confidence,’ comments Susie, ‘and also to have a bit of fun – we’ve come up with fun strap lines for each category like, ‘Do you like it fresh and racy?’ and ‘Let’s get fizzical!’’
The festival is supporting local charity Naomi House and launches the same weekend as Winchester’s Christmas market just round the corner. Peter says, ‘Our aim is to help people buy local for their festive drinking and presents. Exhibitors will be offering exclusive discounts for visitors so don’t miss out on this great chance to pick up some delicious wines at great prices!’
