Although I cannot profess to being a seasoned spa attendee, I have had a few pamper days in my time. When I found a spa right on my doorstep that surpassed all my previous experiences, as you can imagine, I was a little surprised and very delighted.
Dorthe (pronounced Door-Da) of Dorthe Thomas Spa in Hampshire, is 100% dedicated to familiarising herself (and her team) with her clients. I was inundated with advice and tips and felt they really cared about my individual needs. So refreshing!
Dorthe and her team begin by analysing your skin with SAM (a skin analysis machine). This helps them determine the condition of your skin and how it should be treated. My results suggested I was de-hydrated (correct, I do not drink enough water!). The circles under my eyes were also a giveaway. Dorthe and her team reassured me that help was at hand with one of their best-selling facials ‘Oxygen Therapy’. I was also advised that because I didn’t have a regular skincare routine (I confessed!) and had some skin sensitivity, I could benefit from a light ‘Microdermabrasion Facial’ too. Yes please!
The mix of bespoke treatments started with an amazing hot lava shell back massage in one of the centre’s two spacious rooms (no pokey cupboard-style rooms here), decorated in French boutique style. The treatment facilities are so big that they can even accommodate dual bookings for couples, mother/daughter combos or even just good friends. The hot lava shells, with their warming heat, allowed a deeper massage and delivered exactly the right amount of pressure for me to feel relaxed before the facial.
My face was cleaned, steamed and then creams applied before the ‘Crystal Clear’ oxygen was pumped into several layers of skin, reaching right down to the cellular levels. It felt a bit strange but oddly relaxing. Having only ever heard of microdermabrasion, I was extremely keen to see what this clever technology could deliver. Another ‘Crystal Clear’ treatment, Dorthe explained that the process sounded harsher than it was and involved tiny crystal particles blasting against the skin, ridding you of the unwanted dead skin that dulls a complexion. This actually felt amazing. Again, more creams were applied and extra treatment was given around my eyes too.
Finally, a face mask was applied and during the time it took for the mask to harden, Dorthe added in a neck and shoulder massage, just to add to the relaxation and pampering. For this massage alone, I would happily return. Dorthe’s expert touch meant that she could pinpoint the exact areas that needed releasing. Don’t all masseurs do this, you ask? Quite possibly, however, I have never really found one to be quite so accurate. It came as no surprise, therefore, to learn that Dorthe was a personal masseuse to a local sportsman for many years before starting a business of her own in complimentary therapy and beauty.
I am very happy with the results of the treatments – my skin is softer, cleaner and brighter plus I have seen a significant reduction in blemishes and sun damage. Even friends have commented on how clear my skin has become, testament in itself. Microdermabrasion can also aid pigmentations and acne scars and can be used on most parts of the body to treat pimples, in-growing hairs, scars, stretch marks and cellulite. For me, the two therapies complemented one another and I felt as though I had had a really bespoke experience. The skin analysis provides the information that allows your experience to be tailored entirely to you. I felt it was more than just a treat on the day, as the long-lasting effects mean it is good value for money too!
Yes, you can visit expensive and remote venues for spa day packages, however, if you are looking for top quality treatments with an invaluable personal touch, a luxury spa feel and superior products right on your doorstep, then a visit to Dorthe Thomas Spa has to be one this year’s new year resolutions.
