Hat Fair have announced that they are back in Winchester for Christmas with a Woolly twist up their sleeve! Country Child’s Laura Barrington checks it out to see how it is all unravelling.
From the 1st to 24th December Woolly Hat Fair will be opening a door in Winchester every evening at 5pm to reveal a surprise and unexpected Hat Fair performance.
I was privileged to have an invite to the official Woolly Hat Fair sneak preview meeting at the Theatre Royal in Winchester on Monday, where Michelle Walker, Hat Fair’s artistic director, let us in on some of the secrets behind the coming advent doors. I’m not allowed to spill too many beans, as with any advent calendar, what’s happening behind each door can’t be disclosed until the date of opening. However, I can confirm that there is fun for all the family at every day, with some days’ performances chosen especially with the children in mind.
Whilst I can’t tell all, I’m sure I can get away with mentioning a few key words to describe just a small portion of the variety that is in store. There will be everything from performances, exhibitions, artistic projections, weird and wonderful happenings, story-telling and audience participation.
Every event is free to attend and there will be no booking required. Turn up at the door, on the day and enjoy the show. Most events will last, on average, half an hour, however, the performances that last for a shorter period or have limited capacity will be repeated over the course of that time so as many people as possible can enjoy the experience.
Dates to note for everyone: 3rd, 6th, 7th, 11th, 13th, 14th, 20th, 23rd, 24th. For those with young ones, don’t miss the ‘Festive Family’ doors opening on the 4th and 19th.

Which door will be your favourite?
Happy Advent one and all!
