History-loving Brits are so inspired by period dramas that they are decking out their homes like them as soon as they air, according to new figures from eBay, the online marketplace.
As the much anticipated Downton Abbey returns to our screens this weekend, eBay has seen a rise in the demand for Art Deco style furnishings, selling nearly 900 items a day. eBay’s 173,872 current listings for Art Deco furniture include a ‘vanity style suite and mirror’ for £5,856 that would not be out of place on a 1920s ocean liner.
Listings for ‘antique style’ furniture on eBay rise by nearly 50% hour on hour between 10-11pm, particularly on Sunday evening following the screening of period dramas like Downton Abbey and Mr. Selfridge. This is part of the established trend of Britons surfing and shopping from their sofas on second screens such as mobiles and tablets.
Other top period drama-inspired furniture stats include:
- Interest in Victorian furnishing seen on everything from the grisly Ripper Street to Great Expectations means eBay now has nearly 10,000 Victorian style products listed
- Brits inspired by Georgian elegance in blockbuster Belle – the true story of Dido Elizabeth Belle – have nearly 5,000 products to choose from on eBay, including a Georgian Antique Oak Livery Cupboard at £2,250
- Fans of the BBC swashbuckler Musketeers can recreate a 17th century Paris boudoir with a kingsize Rococo-style bed (£1,099)
Hannah Seal, Home and Garden Category Manager at eBay said, “Expensive film sets and high definition TV mean we are paying closer attention to the décor in the things we watch than ever before. Retailers are reacting to this, producing ranges of furniture that reflect the most popular period dramas and inspire consumers to buy on the day the shows broadcast.”
