Country Child went back to school last week for the launch of a delightful collection of written and artistic work by Clayesmore pupils from Year 5 and 6.
Entitled ‘Then and Now’, the professionally-bound book features pieces that the children have been working on under the inspirational guidance of children’s author, Ali Sparkes, who has been conducting workshops with the pupils throughout the academic year.
The event began, at the behest of Ali, with some audience participation as we all rose from our seats in a Mexican Wave. She then went on to describe her own, somewhat inauspicious, beginnings as a writer before literally mesmerising us with her amazing ‘Whirly Whirly’ machine.
After all this excitement, it was time to hear some of the children’s work, read by Ali and the pupils themselves. The pieces were powerful, moving, funny and surprisingly mature considering the age of the authors.
In true Claysmore tradition, the afternoon ended with a wonderful afternoon tea, complete with literary-themed cup cakes for all guests.
