Teenager takes to the Tarmac!

The literal Country Child son recently took part in their exceedingly early but first driving lesson. Here's how they got on.

We have all seen pictures on social media of beloved teenagers being given birthday presents of high-speed driving experiences, but how about the actual thought of these teenagers behind the wheel?

Well, it's one we at Country Child were apprehensive about, but the people from Young Driver reassured us it would be completely safe and fully overseen by professional instructors. So, we booked one of our twelve-year-old sons in to experience a lesson behind the wheel.

The mere thought of a twelve-year-old in control of a car sounds crazy and is of course an age one never wants to see out on the open roads; however Young Driver allows younger children to get the feel of a car in a safe, quiet, and open location. The location is usually set on airfields, test centres and mod land across the UK and these open spaces give the younger driver the confidence to take on lessons without the pressure of live road action and the distractions that comes with it.

Once in the car, safety is key again and all in the hands of fully qualified driving instructors with dual controls. We found each instructor to be welcoming, friendly and its clear that all staff revels in teaching younger clients the ropes. Our son's lesson was 30 minutes long which was just enough to give him the initial run down on indicators, mirrors, gears, brakes, acceleration and turning the wheel a full 360 degrees. He even got to feel the bite point, although pulling away and reversing are for additional and optional longer lessons.

Once the time had run its course, our whole family got a run down of the lesson and our son's promise as a driver to be. Of course, our new young driver is as keen as mustard to continue these lessons to be more road and car confident. In turn giving parents confidence too!

The lessons can be recorded for future scrutiny and learning, but also function as a memento of a special milestone in a young person's life.

Once confidence grows, there are options to drive a fire engine, luxurious Bentley, various classic cars, off roaders and for incredibly young ones to take to the tarmac, there are some fun all electric Firefly cars.

We even found out that lessons can be shared by friends or better still book a party for four or more!

We found this experience to be well worth it for any teenagers who are feeling a little apprehensive about starting to drive and getting in there early can only be of benefit too.
